GENETICS Peer Review Training Workshop(This workshop will provide an introduction to peer reviewing for early career researchers, including graduate students. The workshop will cover best practices and a mock review. Becoming a better reviewer will help you to become a better author and to hone some of the skills central to scientific success, including critical thinking, evaluating research, providing helpful feedback, and understanding the mindset and expectations of peer reviewers and editors. Workshop Agenda: Principles and Purpose of Peer Review, Models of Peer Review, Dissecting a manuscript, Drafting Reviews, Evaluating Reviews, The Journey of a Manuscript at GENETICS, Panel Discussion with GENETICS Editors, Discussion Topics, Best practices, Determining scope, Assessing interest to readers) 3.Grant Workshop Part 1(The program officers will each give an overview followed by questions. A general discussion will follow the introductions based on the questions below. Topic 1: Communicating with Program Officers, Do program officers welcome communications from applicants? What do these interactions typically look like? How should applicants prepare before speaking with their program officer? Take additional questions related to this topic from the audience, Topic 2: Reporting, Are there examples of how to draft progress reports for the funding agencies? What are best practices for preparing for reporting throughout the year? Take additional questions related to this topic from the audience) 4.Grant Workshop Part 2(The panel will discuss issues that were raised in the first Workshop followed by a discussion on the topics below. Topic 1: Study Section: What are obstacles commonly encountered during study sections? How can we better prepare our grant proposals to overcome or avoid these obstacles?
